First Republic Day of India
The first Republic Day of India was celebrated on January 26th, 1950. On this day, the Constitution of India came into effect, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India and making India a republic. The main Republic Day celebration was held in the national capital, New Delhi, where a grand parade was held at the Rajpath, which is now an annual tradition. The first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, unfurled the national flag and gave a speech. The parade featured a display of India’s cultural and military heritage.
Why 26 January is celebrated as Republic Day
January 26th is celebrated as Republic Day in India because it was on this day in 1950 that the Constitution of India came into effect, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of the country and making India a republic. The Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, but it came into effect on January 26, 1950, which is why this date is celebrated as the Republic Day. January 26th was chosen as it was the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day, which was celebrated on January 26, 1930, marking the day when the Indian National Congress declared the independence of India from British colonial rule.
