The year 2020 was a difficult time for many as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down most businesses. However, it was during this period of uncertainty that Kekmart was born. With shops closed and movement restricted, the need for essential items, including cakes for celebrations, remained. Recognizing this demand, we saw an opportunity to bring the joy of cakes to people’s doorsteps.
Kekmart was officially launched on 31 October 2020 with just 2,000 INR. This modest budget was split between domain registration, hosting, and some basic setup costs. We listed local cake shops in Virar, charging a commission of 20-30% for each order placed through the platform. The goal was simple: provide easy access to cakes while supporting local businesses.
Building from Scratch
Launching Kekmart wasn’t a walk in the park. With limited resources, we worked day and night to develop a functional website. Our investment included 500 INR for the domain kekmart.com, 149 INR for kekmart.in, and 800 INR for a month of hosting. After 30 days of relentless effort, we were ready to go live.
But building the website was just the first step. We knew we had to get the word out, so we turned to friends and social media for promotion. The result? In the very first month, Kekmart gained 1,000+ visitors and generated over 40,000 INR in cake sales, leading to a 10,000 INR profit.
Reinvesting for Growth
Instead of pocketing the profits, we made a conscious decision to reinvest every bit into expanding Kekmart. Our focus was on improving the user experience, enhancing our online presence, and ensuring that we could cater to more customers across Virar. This reinvestment strategy helped us sustain growth and gradually build a loyal customer base.
From Online to Offline: Kekmart 2.0
As Kekmart grew in popularity, we realized that the next step was to establish a physical presence. This led to the opening of Kekmart 2.0, our first physical cake shop, which offered both in-store shopping and online delivery. Our website continued to serve as the backbone of the business, allowing customers to order cakes online and have them delivered right to their doorsteps.
Today, Kekmart is known for its fresh, customized cakes, including kids’ cakes, anniversary cakes, birthday cakes, and theme cakes. We’re proud to offer midnight cake delivery in both Virar East and West, ensuring that no celebration is left incomplete.
